What AI Is
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others can write text, answer questions, generate images, and produce code in response to a prompt. They do this by predicting likely patterns based on large amounts of training data — not by thinking, knowing, or understanding the way a person does.
AI output can sound confident and correct while being wrong, outdated, or biased. Verifying and editing AI output is a skill — one we'll practice in this class.
What I Can Do
- Use AI to brainstorm ideas before I write my own work
- Use AI to check my understanding of something I've already tried
- Use AI to get feedback on a draft I've already written myself
- Use AI on assignments my teacher has specifically designated for AI use
- Disclose my AI use when asked, or proactively when unsure
What I Cannot Do
- Submit AI-generated text, code, or other content as my own without disclosure
- Use AI on assignments my teacher has marked "No AI"
- Use AI tools at school that haven't been approved for student use
- Enter another student's personal information or work into an AI tool
The Rule I'll Follow When I'm Unsure
Ask my teacher before I submit — not after.
Asking is always the safer choice. A student who asks is never penalized more than a student who guesses and gets it wrong.
What Happens If I Don't Follow This Agreement
Using AI in violation of this agreement or my teacher's assignment instructions is academic dishonesty. It may result in:
- A zero on the assignment
- A required redo
- A parent/guardian conversation
- A note in my academic record
