How can students use AI without becoming dependent on it?
Practice first without AI, use AI as a tutor or check, and require students to explain the work in their own words. Hint-first tools and some AI-off assignments keep the thinking with the student.
Dependence shows up when the student cannot start without a prompt box. Counter it with process: attempt, hint, explain. Alternate AI-on and AI-off tasks. Teach students to close the tool and redo a step themselves.
