Is using AI cheating?
Using AI is not automatically cheating. It becomes dishonest when a student presents AI-generated work as entirely their own, or uses it on an assessment that was meant to be independent. The assignment has to say what is allowed.
Cheating is about misrepresenting authorship and violating the rules of the task. A student who uses AI as a tutor and then writes in their own words is in a different place from a student who leaves the prompt in the essay.
Schools make that line teachable by defining allowed uses, requiring disclosure when it matters, and using tools that guide instead of complete. Detectors alone do not settle the question.
