Should schools use AI detectors?
Treat detectors as a weak signal, not a verdict. They produce false positives and false negatives. Schools that rely on them for discipline create fairness problems. Design the assignment and the tool so students still do the thinking.
Detectors estimate whether text looks machine-generated. They are not a reliable finding of fact. Using a score as the reason for a integrity consequence is a poor practice.
If a school uses a detector at all, pair it with human review, student conversation, and process evidence. The stronger strategy is hint-first student AI, disclosure rules, and tasks that require explanation. Built to teach — not built to do the work.
