Can AI companies use student conversations to train models?
Some can, if their terms allow it. Schools should ask explicitly, prefer products that do not train on student chats by default, and make that answer part of the approved-tool decision.
Training use is not a universal rule. Some vendors opt consumer chats into training. Some school products separate student data from training. Terms change. The only safe approach is to ask, record the answer, and revisit it when the product or the contract changes.
If a vendor trains on student conversations, that belongs in family communication and may be a reason not to approve the tool for K–12 use.
