What should schools ask an AI company about student data?
Ask what student information is collected, whether conversations are stored, who can see them, whether they are used to train models, how long they are kept, and how the school can delete or export them. Ask for the answers in writing.
Useful questions include:
- What student data do you collect, and why?
- Are prompts and conversations stored? For how long?
- Who at the company — and at the school — can read them?
- Do you use student conversations to train models?
- Where is data hosted, and which subprocessors are involved?
- How does the school delete or export a student's data?
- How do you handle a parent or eligible-student request?
