What should students NOT use AI for?
Students should not submit AI-generated work as entirely their own, use AI to complete an assessment when it has not been permitted, fabricate sources, share private or sensitive information, or try to bypass school safety or integrity settings.
A policy is clearer when it names the out-of-bounds uses, not only the allowed ones. Most schools should treat these as inappropriate unless a teacher has explicitly designed the assignment otherwise:
- Submitting AI-generated work as entirely their own
- Using AI to complete a quiz, test, or assessment that was meant to be independent
- Fabricating sources, citations, or information
- Entering private or sensitive information about themselves or others
- Trying to bypass safety filters or academic-integrity settings
- Generating inappropriate or harmful content
Rules should still flex by grade, subject, and assignment. The principle stays the same: students remain responsible for the thinking the work was designed to measure. See Academic Integrity.
